Tactile Robotic Assembly

Multi-material modular design through robot learning and tactile sensor technology

We are pleased to announce the start of the interdisciplinary research project “Tactile Robotic Assembly – Multimaterial Modular Design through Robot Learning and Touch Sensor Technology” for the year 2020.

In this project we develop new modules and joining methods for robotic-autonomous construction. Using a new image-based sensor technology, robots receive tactile feedback and are able to “feel” objects. The sensor feedback allows the robot to recognize component tolerances and surface conditions of different modules and to learn adequate joining techniques.

The project is a cooperation of the departments Intelligent Autonomous Systems (ISA) Prof. Jan Peters at the Department of Computer Science and the Digital Design Unit (DDU) Prof. Dr.-Ing Oliver Tessmann at the Department of Architecture.

The project is supported by the funding initiative interdisciplinary research of the Technische Universität Darmstadt.
